28 Jan Amazing STEM Opp for Atlanta Area 9th Grade Boys…Need Your Help

It’s been two weeks since Goodie Nation’s #HackGentrification Demo Day, and I’m just now recovering. It took a lot to produce the entire program (I compare it to pledging a line in college), and I had to take a vacation to the Canadian Rockies to help in the recovery. Next week, I plan to share my key learnings as well as ways we’ll improve, and Amplify 4 Good’s upcoming innovation programs for CARE USA, Leadership Dekalb, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

But now, I need your help in making sure as many Atlanta-area male 9th graders of color apply to take advantage of an amazing STEM program this Summer.

Oakland-based Level Playing Institute, backed by Kapor Capital (one of the country’s top venture capital firms), is bringing the full version of their nationally-recognized Summer Math and Science Honors (SMASH) Academy to Morehouse this summer. SMASH boasts a rigorous 5-week, 3-year summer, fully residential STEM enrichment program which provides access to STEM coursework and access to mentors, role models, and support networks of students of color. Each summer, SMASH scholars spend five weeks on a college campus immersed in STEM and live among other high-potential, underrepresented (African American, Latino/a, Native American, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander, low-income, first-in-family to attend college) high school students. In addition to their summer courses, SMASH scholars remain engaged during the school year through monthly STEM workshops and academic programming. This includes SAT prep, college counseling, financial aid workshops, and other activities to ensure continued academic success. They’re already at Stanford, Cal Berkeley, and UCLA. And this is their first-time being outside of California.

This could be the start of something huge as it relates to getting tons of Metro Atlanta youth of color into the Innovation Ecosystem. Please forward to as many teachers, church groups, mentor groups, parents, sports organizations, etc, etc, etc. in Fulton, Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, and Gwinnett counties. The application deadline is March 1st.
